Westside Small Business
In partnership with District 5 Councilwoman Shirley Gonzales, LiftFund, LaunchSA, and UTSA Small Business Development Center, WDC has setup the Westside Small Business Helpline. This is a one-stop, bilingual helpline, designed to ensure small businesses have access to the advice and support they need to stay open and keep people in jobs amidst impact of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).
Callers can receive support on a variety of issues ranging from emergency funding, to landlord and tenant issues to best practices on reopening safely and where to get personal protective equipment (PPE). By partnering with other community organizations and lenders, the Westside Helpline will be able to connect callers with the best resources based on their situation and need. Follow up calls will be conducted to ensure business owners received assistance and issues resolved.

Current Stats for Small Business Helpline:
- Fielded 191 phone calls
- Hosted 1 in-person training to train 17 volunteers. Volunteers distributed 650 fliers resulting in Door-to-door canvassing of 70% of the businesses in ten major corridors of Westside San Antonio
- Provided technical assistance to 135 businesses
- Social media reach to 1,244 businesses
- Digital flier distributed to 1,583 individuals & businesses
- Emailed Westside Business Alliance network of 126 businesses

Access to Capital for Westside Small Businesses
Small businesses account for 97 percent of San Antonio’s employer firms. These same small, locally owned businesses have been among the hardest hit during the coronavirus pandemic.
In response to the economic impact of the current COVID-19 public health emergency, the Westside Development Corporation has allocated up to $50,000 in forgivable loans for small businesses impacted by COVID-19. As of 6/1/2020, these funds have been fully distributed.
In addition, WDC has partnered with Lift Fund and Bexar County to provide $1,386,752 in grants to small businesses in Precinct 2.

Eligible businesses may also apply for the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP).

Lastly, WDC is providing outreach and technical assistance to small business owners to apply for these funds through the Westside Small Business Helpline.

Westside Development Corporation, Centro SA and SAGE joined forces to launch #SmallBizBingoSA, aimed at encouraging San Antonian’s to support locally owned, small businesses that are the foundation of the local economy.

Open Signs Campaign
The Coronavirus crisis has caused a tremendous amount of disruption and confusion; especially when it comes to customers and patrons knowing which restaurants and businesses are currently open. WDC is now offering FREE 24”x36” ‘Open for Business!’ signs, for those businesses operating within WDC’s boundaries.
